The LIFE Maraisilience project
4 years of collective action for adaptation to climate change in the Marais Poitevin.
The LIFE Maraisilience project is a project led by nine public organizations involved in the Marais Poitevin region. Its aim is to bring together local stakeholders around a common issue:
How will we live in the Marais Poitevin in 2050, in a context of climate change?
Launched in October 2024 for a period of 4 years, it benefits from the European LIFE funding program.

The Marais Poitevin faces new climatic challenges
The Marais Poitevin is the first wetland on the French Atlantic coast, certified by Ramsar since 2023, recognizing its international importance. Shaped by humans for several centuries, this vast territory is now facing new climatic challenges.
- Increasingly frequent and intense weather hazards: river floods, marine submersion, storms, drought, etc.
- A rise in ocean level, while the Marais Poitevin is partly located below ocean level and receives fresh water from the surrounding rivers.
A European climate project in the Marais Poitevin

To anticipate climate change, the Marais Poitevin has decided to mobilize collectively, within the framework of a European “LIFE” project.
Selected in 2023 by the European Commission, “LIFE Maraisilience” benefits from the LIFE program, a financial instrument of the European Commission dedicated to supporting innovative projects in the fields of the environment and climate.
3 goals
- Better understand and share the challenges of climate change
- Getting residents, socio-economic stakeholders and elected officials to think together
- Define concrete adaptation actions at the end of the project, an approach that can be replicated in Europe
